Roosevelt Island Project - 1975

Model from West
Plan of North Tower, parking structure, from East

Early in Vittorio's career at Pratt Institute, Sam Gordon, Lisa Elfenbein and Michael Thompson worked with Vittorio on a Project for Roosevelt Island.  Our project never reached completion, but perhaps formed a foundation for the work of others to come later.  Here it is in drawing and model form, published here for the first time, with great respect and admiration for our teacher, Vittorio Giorgini.

  1. I would love to see more of this project. It is so important to me that all of you are sharing your work. These projects offer more architectural education for me and show further possibilities of what we were taught. Thank you Mike for your postings!

The various scale of drawings composed on one sheet remind me of Mies's Bauhaus student's housing project. I also see some pneumatic structural enclosure within the octet framework. So many possibilities explored in a project - nicely done!

It is so amazing to see how Vittorio's work and his collaboration with us had evolved from early seventies to mid nineties with no other means of support- no clients, no real institutional/school backing, no grants. I am truly inspired by this work.

  2. Here are more photos of the study models and the larger model we made in 1975-76. For me, an enjoyable trip down memory lane . . .
